9/11 and continued acts of global terrorism have challenged the understanding of academic experts, policymakers, and students, Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Critical questions have been raised about Islam and Muslim politics in the modern world: Are Islam and modernity compatible? Is Islam in need of and capable of reform? What do Islam and what do Muslims have to say about globalization, democracy, human rights, women, jihad, violence, terrorism, and suicide bombing? Thoroughly revised and updated in this second edition, Islam in Transition: Muslim Perspectives responds to these and other questions, taking into account the myriad of changes and challenges that Islam and Muslims have experienced over the last twenty years. Featuring numerous contemporary writings, fifty percent of which are new to this edition, it provides a point of entry into the various and changing dynamics of Muslim discourse and politics. This volume also bridges the nineteenth and the twenty-first centuries by retaining relevant classic selections from the first edition--by a diverse group of contributors from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the U.S.--that offer historical background. Ideal for courses on Islam, politics in Islam, and Middle Eastern history, Islam in Transition: Muslim Perspectives, Second Edition, presents a wide range of viewpoints from a cross-section of Muslim intellectuals and religious leaders, from secular to devout, traditionalist to reformist, and moderate to extremist. The essays address key issues including Islam and nationalism, socialism, the secular state, economics, modernization, democracy, women, jihad, violence, terrorism, suicide bombing, globalization, and civilizational dialogue.

Civil Islam tells the story of Islam and democratization in Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim nation. Challenging stereotypes of Islam as antagonistic to democracy, this study of courage and reformation in the face of state terror suggests possibilities for democracy in the Muslim world and beyond.Democratic in the early 1950s and with rich precedents for tolerance and civility, Indonesia succumbed to violence. In 1965, Muslim parties were drawn into the slaughter of half a million communists. In the aftermath of this bloodshed, a "New Order" regime came to power, suppressing democratic forces and instituting dictatorial controls that held for decades. Yet from this maelstrom of violence, repressed by the state and denounced by conservative Muslims, an Islamic democracy movement emerged, strengthened, and played a central role in the 1998 overthrow of the Soeharto regime. In 1999, Muslim leader Abdurrahman Wahid was elected President of a reformist, civilian government. In explaining how this achievement was possible, Robert Hefner emphasizes the importance of civil institutions and public civility, but argues that neither democracy nor civil society is possible without a civilized state. Against portrayals of Islam as inherently antipluralist and undemocratic, he shows that Indonesia's Islamic reform movement repudiated the goal of an Islamic state, mobilized religiously ecumenical support, promoted women's rights, and championed democratic ideals. This broadly interdisciplinary and timely work heightens our awareness of democracy's necessary pluralism, and places Indonesia at the center of our efforts to understand what makes democracy work.
Islam today is a rapidly growing religion: Indonesia, the most populous Islamic land, has well over 100 million Muslims....

In light of the War in Iraq, diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and the Middle East, and the increasing presence of Muslims in the West, the need to understand Islam and Muslims has never been greater. A RIVETING INVESTIGATION OF THE JAGGED FAULT LINE BETWEEN CHRISTIAN AND MUSLIM WORLDS The tenth parallel, the line of latitude 700 miles north of the equator, is the defining metaphor of our time. An ideological front line stretching across two continents and nineteen countries, this is where Christianity and Islam collide a profound encounter that shapes the lives of more than a billion people. It s not just geographic; it s demographic. The center of global faith lies in the jungles and buzzing megacities of Africa and Asia. Of the world s 1.3 billion Muslims, more than half live along the tenth parallel, as do roughly 60 percent of the world s 2 billion Christians. Here, as elsewhere, Christianity and Islam are growing faster than the world s population. The stories of The Tenth Parallel examine the complex relationships of religion, land, and oil, among other resources; local conflicts and global ideology; politics and contemporary martyrdom, both Islamic and Christian. This visionary work of literary nonfiction will set the agenda for the way we think about religion and our shared future, and how we divide our dwindling resources. An award-winning investigative journalist and poet, Eliza Griswold has spent the past five years in the villages and slums along the tenth parallel on both sides of the faith-based fault line. Her observations, tempered with respect and deep curiosity about the role of God in the lives of her subjects, renders The Tenth Parallel a timely and essential examination of the relationship between faith and violence in the contemporary world.
In a Western world suddenly acutely interested in Islam, one question has been repeatedly heard above the din: where are the Muslim reformers? With this ambitious volume, Tariq Ramadan firmly establishes himself as one of Europe's leading thinkers and one of Islam's most innovative and important voices. As the number of Muslims living in the West grows, the question of what it means to be a Western Muslim becomes increasingly important to the futures of both Islam and the West. While the media are focused on radical Islam, Ramadan claims, a silent revolution is sweeping Islamic communities in the West, as Muslims actively seek ways to live in harmony with their faith within a Western context. French, English, German, and American Muslims--women as well as men--are reshaping their religion into one that is faithful to the principles of Islam, dressed in European and American cultures, and definitively rooted in Western societies. Ramadan's goal is to create an independent Western Islam, anchored not in the traditions of Islamic countries but in the cultural reality of the West. He begins by offering a fresh reading of Islamic sources, interpreting them for a Western context and demonstrating how a new understanding of universal Islamic principles can open the door to integration into Western societies. He then shows how these principles can be put to practical use. Ramadan contends that Muslims can-indeed must-be faithful to their principles while participating fully in the civic life of Western secular societies. Grounded in scholarship and bold in its aims, Western Muslims and the Future of Islam offers a striking vision of a new Muslim Identity, one which rejects once and for all the idea that Islam must be defined in opposition to the West.
George Dardess believes that Jesus’ injunction to "Love your neighbor as yourself" means that serious Christians should engage with Islam and come to know their Muslim neighbors. In this informative, enlightening book, Dardess invites us to explore some of Islam’s key beliefs and practices, using his own failings and successes as a guide. He shares how he sought to build bridges with the local Muslim community, and how his faith has been expanded and enhanced by the relationships and understandings that have resulted. Each chapter includes a theological reflection on how a particular facet of Islam may enhance (rather than detract from) our own Christian self-understanding. At times humorous, questioning, and warm, Meeting Islam is an engaging guide to the rewards (and the dangers) of venturing outside the boundaries of one’s own faith.
Gain profound insight into the ways Muslims think, feel, and believe so you can effectively present the gospel! Empowering and insightful, Greear's guide transcends traditional apologetics to help you understand Islamic culture and religion. Discover how to avoid offending your Muslim neighbors, form friendships, and respectfully turn objections into opportunities to share your faith.
In this comprehensive study of the Islamic revival from 1947 to the present, historian David Selbourne traces in detail the causes motivating the rise of Muslim fundamentalism in many countries and the West's largely uncomprehending response to it. He frankly describes the hostilities, cruelties, and errors of judgment on both sides. Writing neither from the 'left' nor the 'right', Selbourne pieces together up-to-date information from more numerous sources than in any other work on the subject. He highlights the grotesque role that some sections of the Western media have played and seeks to do justice to the Islamist cause, demonstrating how many of the real issues of the Islamic revival have been evaded. Selbourne argues that whether the 'reawakening' of the Islamic and Arab worlds has taken the political form of Arab nationalism, as under the leadership of Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser in the 1950s, or the economic form of the OPEC oil embargo in 1973 and 1974, or the religious form of the Iranian revolution of 1979 and the present al-Qaeda suicide squads, in all its guises it is motivated by a sense of entitlement in Muslims to determine their own destiny free of Western subordination. The book contains separate chapters on: the immense scale of the Islamic resurgence and the upheavals and bloodshed it has caused, including between Muslim and Muslim; the concentration of the media on the violence and atrocities committed in the course of it; the deepening conflicts between Muslims and non-Muslims in countries where Muslims have settled; and the types of lies, half-truths, deceptions and near-insane rhetoric which have been used both by Muslims and their antagonists in the struggles between them. The book then looks at the role played by Israel and Jews both in provoking hostility and as a source of obsession on the part of others; examines impartially and in detail the positions taken, and the moral trickery used on all sides, in such disputes as the Rushdie case; analyses the role of civil libertarians and human rights activists in promoting the Islamist cause, and in permitting liberties to be taken with, and from, Western democratic societies; and in its eighth chapter looks at the various methods and alibis employed in order to shift responsibility for violence away from the perpetrators. In the penultimate chapter, the author pays tribute to the great moral energy of the Islamic resurgence, showing that it has the beating of the frail ideologies of the West. He argues that this is particularly so at a time when much of Christianity, and especially the Catholic Church, have a diminishing moral status. And in the last chapter, he rejects as an illusion the prospect of a significant 'democratization' of Muslim and Arab nations, and shows how a combination of demography, Islam's ethical power, and the West's dependency on oil have the non-Muslim world on the run. Selbourne concludes with a warning against the illusions of the West about its superiority and ability to contain a force that is confident of its own moral superiority and certain of its ultimate triumph. Addressed both to general readers and to policy makers, academics, and journalists, The Losing Battle with Islam will stand for some time as one of the most impartial and authoritative accounts of a half century of Western conflict with Islam.

In America, public perception of Islam is skewed, sometimes presented as a religion of peace, sometimes as a belief system very similar to Christianity. These depictions, among others, can make decisions based on this information difficult. R. C. Sproul (The Holiness of God) and Abdul Saleeb (Answering Islam, 2d ed), an ex-Muslim, have no other agenda but to serve the American community by warning the world about this global threat. Clearly delineating where Christianity and Islam differ, the authors discuss core Christian doctrines, such as salvation and the nature of God, this book builds off of both Saleeb's earlier book (co-authored with Norman Geisler) and Sproul's earlier When Worlds Collide: Where is God in Terrorism, War, & Suffering?, going more in depth to address those specific issues which most confuse the issue concerning the difference between Christianity and Islam.
The events of September 11, 2001, forever changed the world as we knew it. In their wake, the quest for international order has prompted a reshuffling of global aims and priorities. In a fresh approach, Gilles Kepel focuses on the Middle East as a nexus of international disorder and decodes the complex language of war, propaganda, and terrorism that holds the region in its thrall. The breakdown of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process in 2000 was the first turn in a downward spiral of violence and retribution. Meanwhile, a neo-conservative revolution in Washington unsettled U.S. Mideast policy, which traditionally rested on the twin pillars of Israeli security and access to Gulf oil. In Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan, a transformation of the radical Islamist doctrine of Bin Laden and Zawahiri relocated the arena of terrorist action from Muslim lands to the West; Islamist radicals proclaimed jihad against their enemies worldwide. Kepel examines the impact of global terrorism and the ensuing military operations to stem its tide. He questions the United States' ability to address the Middle East challenge with Cold War rhetoric, while revealing the fault lines in terrorist ideology and tactics. Finally, he proposes the way out of the Middle East quagmire that triangulates the interests of Islamists, the West, and the Arab and Muslim ruling elites. Kepel delineates the conditions for the acceptance of Israel, for the democratization of Islamist and Arab societies, and for winning the minds and hearts of Muslims in the West. (20041014)

An increasing number of people have questions about Islam and Muslims. But how can we approach and study Islam after September 11th? Which is the best methodology to understand an Islam that is changing in a globalized world?  The Anthropology of Islam argues that Islam today needs to be studied as a living religion through the observation of everyday Muslim life. Drawing on extensive original fieldwork, Marranci provides provocative analyses of Islam and its relation to issues such as identities, politics, culture, power and gender.  The Anthropology of Islam is unprecedented in its innovative and challenging discussion about fieldwork among Muslims, and its ethnographically based interpretations of contemporary aspects of Islam in a post-September 11th society. The book will appeal to those in anthropology and beyond who see and are interested in investigating the unsettled place of Islam in our multicultural society.

This book is an incisive, personal statement about the essence of Islam by one of the world's leading advocates of inter-faith dialogue and understanding - Prince El Hassan bin Talal of Jordan. The core of the book is a statement of belief in a question and answer format that allows Islam's basic tenets to be quickly grasped by a wide audience. In form and content To Be A Muslim reaches both a Western audience and also Muslims (who themselves can be Westerners) who are seeking to articulate their faith and to explain it to themselves and to others.
This book brings together the ideas of a number of contemporary modernist and liberal Muslim thinkers, exposing an important intellectual current in Islamic thought which will be new to many Western readers. Responding to the challenges brought by colonialism and modernization, the contributors propose new conceptions and interpretations of Islam consonant with the age. Although their specific concerns and emphases vary, they all reconsider the relation between religion and politics and the incorporation of modern Western ideas.

Nearly seven million Muslims live in the United States today, and their relations with non-Muslims are strained. Many Americans associate Islam with figures such as Osama bin Laden, and they worry about homegrown terrorists. To shed light on this increasingly important religious group and counter mutual distrust, renowned scholar Akbar Ahmed conducted the most comprehensive study to date of the American Muslim community. Journey into America explores and documents how Muslims are fitting into U.S. society, placing their experience within the larger context of American identity. This eye-opening book also offers a fresh and insightful perspective on American history and society. Following up on his critically acclaimed Journey into Islam: The Crisis of Globalization (Brookings, 2007), Ahmed and his team of young researchers traveled for a year through more than seventy-five cities across the United States from New York City to Salt Lake City; from Las Vegas to Miami; from the large Muslim enclave in Dearborn, Michigan, to small, predominantly white towns like Arab, Alabama. They visited homes, schools, and over one hundred mosques to discover what Muslims are thinking and how they are living every day in America. In this unprecedented exploration of American Muslim communities, Ahmed asked challenging questions: Can we expect an increase in homegrown terrorism? How do American Muslims of Arab descent differ from those of other origins (for example, Somalia or South Asia)? Why are so many white women converting to Islam? How can a Muslim become accepted fully as an American , and what does that mean? He also delves into the potentially sticky area of relations with other religions. For example, is there truly a deep divide between Muslims and Jews in America? And how well do Muslims get along with other religious groups, such as Mormons in Utah? Journey into America is equal parts anthropological research, listening tour, and travelogue. Whereas Ahmed's previous book took the reader into homes, schools, and mosques in the Muslim world, his new quest takes us into the heart of America and its Muslim communities. It is absolutely essential reading for anyone trying to make sense of America today. Advanced praise for Journey into America A brilliant follow-up to Journey into Islam. Ahmed s insights should be required reading for anyone grappling with national security, national identity, and national cohesion in today s complex era. —Colonel David Kilcullen, author of The Accidental Guerrilla An absolutely riveting journey into an America most Americans have no idea about. As the U.S. faces up to the tensions within its own Muslim communities, it could not be more timely. —Christina Lamb, Sunday Times Washington Bureau Chief My friend Professor Ahmed came to America in the great tradition of Alexis de Tocqueville: a perceptive foreigner affectionately looking at America and American identity. This important new book advances his heroic, even dangerous, five minutes to midnight effort to save us from our foolish mutual animosities. Pray his efforts are not too late. —Tony Blankley, Washington Times and Heritage Foundation "A timely and stimulating contribution to a critically important issue: the West's (and especially America's) relationship to Islam."—Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Adviser What a wonderful, wonderful work! This book presents great insight into the diversity and vibrancy of American Islam and its potential to help achieve the American promise. —Eboo Patel, Founder and Executive Director of Interfaith Youth Core

This book traces the history of Islam, from its early environment and origins in the life and career of Mohammed, through its classical expressions to its interactions with the West in the modern world.
Are Islam and democracy on a collision course? Do Islamic movements seek to "hijack democracy?" How have governments in the Muslim world responded to the many challenges of Islam and democracy today? A global religious resurgence and calls for greater political participation have been major forces in the post-Cold War period. Across the Muslim world, governments and Islamic movements grapple with issues of democratization and civil society. Islam and Democracy explores the Islamic sources (beliefs and institutions) relevant to the current debate over greater political participation and democratization. Esposito and Voll use six case studies--Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Sudan--to look at the diversity of Muslim experiences and experiments. At one end of the spectrum, Iran and Sudan represent two cases of militant, revolutionary Islam establishing political systems. In Pakistan and Malaysia, however, the new movements have been recognized and made part of the political process. Egypt and Algeria reveal the coexistence of both extremist and moderate Islamic activism and demonstrate the complex challenges confronting ruling elites. These case studies prove that despite commonalities, differing national contexts and identities give rise to a multiplicity of agendas and strategies. This broad spectrum of case studies, reflecting the multifaceted relationship of Islam and Democracy, provides important insight into the powerful forces of religious resurgence and democratization which will inevitably impact global politics in the twenty first century.

"I have to be honest with you. Islam is on very thin ice with me.... Through our screaming self-pity and our conspicuous silences, we Muslims are conspiring against ourselves. We're in crisis and we're dragging the rest of the world with us. If ever there was a moment for an Islamic reformation, it's now. For the love of God, what are we doing about it?"In this open letter, Irshad Manji unearths the troubling cornerstones of mainstream Islam today: tribal insularity, deep-seated anti-Semitism, and an uncritical acceptance of the Koran as the final, and therefore superior, manifesto of God's will. But her message is ultimately positive. She offers a practical vision of how Islam can undergo a reformation that empowers women, promotes respect for religious minorities, and fosters a competition of ideas. Her vision revives "ijtihad," Islam's lost tradition of independent thinking. In that spirit, Irshad has a refreshing challenge for both Muslims and non-Muslims: Don't silence yourselves. Ask questions---out loud. The Trouble with Islam Today is a clarion call for a fatwa-free future.
One day, an American on the verge of converting to Islam said to one of the editors, "Please, I fear I am about to make the biggest mistake of my life. Please give me one solid reason not to convert." This is the book Joel Richardson wishes he had at that moment. Powerful, often shocking but always heartfelt, these essays from over a dozen individuals who have left Islam -- often in fear for their lives -- are remarkable for their honesty. The stories of how these men and women freed themselves from this repressive and brutal religion are not just inspirational, but present a searing challenge to those Westerners determined to perpetuate the "Islam is a religion of peace" myth at all costs.
In a post-9/11 world, many Americans conflate the mainstream Muslim majority with the beliefs and actions of an extremist minority. But what do the world’s Muslims think about the West, or about democracy, or about extremism itself? Who Speaks for Islam? spotlights this silenced majority. The book is the product of a mammoth six-year study in which the Gallup Organization conducted tens of thousands of hour-long, face-to-face interviews with residents of more than 35 predominantly Muslim nations — urban and rural, young and old, men and women, educated and illiterate. It asks the questions everyone is curious about: Why is the Muslim world so anti-American? Who are the extremists? Is democracy something Muslims really want? What do Muslim women want? The answers to these and other pertinent, provocative questions are provided not by experts, extremists, or talking heads, but by empirical evidence — the voices of a billion Muslims.
Of the 900 million people who today follow the Islamic faith, all are profoundly affected by the teachings of Muhammad and by Muslim traditions that have developed over the past 1300 years....
